background
Before starting work on Nick of Time , Raitt applied to many record companies to get a new record deal . During this time, Raitt met producer Don Was through Hal Wilner, who was working on Stay Awake , a Disney tribute album for A&M Records . Was and Wilner both wanted Raitt to sing Baby Mine (a song from the Disney film Dumbo ). Raitt recorded the song and then asked if they could produce their new album. Both agreed and became producers of the album.

Comments from Raitt
In 1989:
“I wanted to make a recording that was similar to Give It Up . It's a journey back to the roots. It was very refreshing for me to play a lot of guitar and produce the tracks ... In many ways it's like a first album. It's for a new record company and it's getting all the attention and criticism. And it's my first album for a new era ... "
In 1991, about winning her three Grammy Awards:
“It was so unlikely. I imagined winning the 'Rock-Female' Grammy, but I couldn't imagine winning three Grammys at once: 'Ok Bonnie. You have a new record deal, you write your own songs that come close to - hallelujah ; We'll give you a price. ' I didn't go to the awards ceremony after the album was recognized in its category. Ella Fitzgerald read my name! I mean, it was the greatest honor for me. "
