Control is the third studio album by the American singer Janet Jackson . It was released on February 6, 1986 by the record company A&M Records . The sound of the album and the music are determined by unconventional mixes of R&B , funk , disco , hip-hop and synthesizer - percussion instruments . Jackson's texts mostly revolve around the changed circumstances in her life and deal mainly with autobiographical topics.

Control proved to be a success both commercially and artistically. The album reached number 1 in the American charts, a total of five singles were represented in the top five and were also successful worldwide. Control received rave reviews from most critics, and leading media analyzed the album in detail, especially in terms of content. For many critics, Jackson revolutionized contemporary music with this album and established himself as a superstar in the R&B field.

The album was showered with numerous honors, among other things it was nominated for a Grammy in 1987 in the main category "Best Album". The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named it one of the top 200 albums of all time.

history

Joseph Jackson, patriarch of the Jackson family, was known as the manager of The Jackson Five . Later he arranged for Janet Jackson a record deal with A&M Records, the first two albums, which were overseen by the brothers Marlon and Michael Jackson , as well as Jesse Johnson flopped. After the downfall, Jackson fired her father as manager and hired John McClain, an employee of A&M Records. Through his contact, she confided (against her parents' wishes) to the duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who had already worked with greats like Prince and The Human League . Through this cooperation, Jackson celebrated her long-awaited big breakthrough at the age of 20.

Musically, the album Control varies the styles of rhythm and blues , funk , disco and rap , and the drums come from a synthesizer , which can also be found in contemporary R&B in the 1980s .

After the release, the album replaced Whitney Houston's self-titled album in the US album charts and was in turn replaced by Patti LaBelle's album Winner in You .

In 2016 the CD received an entry in the hall of fame for the best albums of all time, compiled by PULS from Bayerischer Rundfunk .
