Jesse Johnson (musician)

Jesse Woods Johnson (born May 29, 1960 in Rock Island , Illinois ) is an American guitarist .

biography

Johnson began his musical career as a guitarist in the American band The Time , which was founded in the 1980s by the musician Prince .

After leaving The Time, he founded his own band project in 1985 under the name "Jesse Johnson's Revue" and released the debut album of the same name . In addition to him, the group included drummer and percussionist Bobby Vandell, bassist Jerry Hubbard, singer Kimberly Cage, keyboardist Mark Cardenas, guitarist Michael Baker and keyboardist Tim Bradley. The album climbed into the top 10 of the Billboard R&B charts as well as the top 50 of the pop charts and was awarded a gold record . The extracts Be Your Man , Can You Help Me and I Want My Girl entered the top 10 of the R&B charts in 1985.

Johnson continued his career as a solo artist. The majority of the former band members can also be heard on his solo records. The albums Shockadelica (1986) and Every Shade of Love (1988) were further chart successes. The singles Crazay (duet with Sly Stone , 1986) and Love Struck (1988) made it into the R&B top 10 twice.

As a producer, Johnson has worked successfully with Cheryl Lynn , Ta Mara & the Seen, dáKRASH, Janet Jackson and others.
