janet. is the fifth studio album by the American singer Janet Jackson . It was released on May 18, 1993 via Virgin Records . It was the first album on this label after Jackson's move from A&M Records for $ 32 million, an artist's highest-value record deal to date.
Concept / backgrounds
Jackson had already worked with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on the previous albums Control and Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation in 1814 and achieved several awards and successes with them. The naming janet. ( Pronunciation: Janet, period ) symbolized by the omission of the surname Jackson Janet's now taken step towards independence and emancipation from her famous family in musical terms. In terms of text, janet is. to be seen as a distancing from Jackson's previous song content. Compared to her previous work (such as Let's Wait A While , who spoke out in favor of sexual abstinence ), topics such as sex , masturbation and passion were dealt with aggressively and unabashedly on this album . Jackson justified this with the fact that Control and Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 resulted from their previous personality, coming from a well-bred, sheltered family. Her goal of emancipation and creative further development could only be completed if she redefined herself and her environment accordingly ( “give myself over to a creative environment […]” ). With this content orientation, the album is prototypical for the development of contemporary R&B in the 1990s and 2000s.
Jackson also acted as co-producer , which is seen as a reason for the departure from her previously accustomed sound. Instead of percussive and synthesizer-pregnant dance-pop, softer, at times more soulful arrangements had emerged. The musical design was no longer exclusively subject to the aesthetics of the so-called Minneapolis sound for which Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis had become famous.
In addition to self-composed, partly orchestrated pieces, janet made use of it. also the technique of sampling , which should reach its peak until the mid-90s. Set pieces by Diana Ross & The Supremes , Stevie Wonder or Kool & the Gang can be heard on the album.
Cover
The cover of the album shows Janet Jackson dressed in jeans and bare chested, her bosom covered by two hands from a person standing behind her. This is her then husband René Elizondo. The publication of the cover photo on the front page of the September issue of Rolling Stone made the picture world famous.

Reviews
The follow-up album to Control and Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 was highly anticipated by critics and fans as Janet and her producers received Grammy awards for their novel sound. For quite a few critics, janet was. a disappointment. Her intention to present herself to the public as a self-confident, adult woman failed in many words and ears. Jackson had neither emancipated himself nor made any musical development. Jon Pareles even judged in the New York Times that Jackson wanted to present himself more as a sex object instead of further developing her musical approach from the 1980s for the following decade. The Los Angeles Times also criticized that the album's success could only be explained by the fact that it contained aphrodisiac or sexually stimulating endeavors. In many places the album was ascribed musical diversity, which, however, in view of the record-breaking record deal and the affected obscenity, would not be sufficient to present a good album. David Browne even accused Jackson of wanting to celebrate a kind of post-pubertal nymphomania and promiscuity due to her allegedly conservative family, who had not taught her how to deal with nudity .
