Musical

That's the Way Love Goes is a classic R&B title, with elements of modern contemporary R&B, which would later establish itself worldwide. Musically, the song relies on calm soulful string instruments that go well with the mood of the song and go perfectly with Janet's smoky voice. Jacksons reached a vocal range from the high F 3 to the low Bb 4 octave with their singing . The song also uses a typical hip-hop - Beat with around 100 beats per minute . The song uses a sample from James Brown's number one R&B hit Papa Don't Take No Mess from 1974. In terms of content, the song deals with a tender and beautiful love affair between a woman and a man. The song is sung from the woman's point of view.

Music video

Jackson's ex-husband, René Elizondo, Jr., directed the music video for That's the Way Love Goes , which was filmed in March 1993. In the music video, Jackson is in her hotel room and her friends encourage Janet to sing her latest song. Jackson starts singing, but she is quickly interrupted by her friend Tish so that she can tell Janet, “Yo, this is slamming!” Tish puts a demo tape in a cassette recorder and everyone starts to dance to the recording. Tina Landon took over the choreographic direction in the music video. In the music video, the then unknown Jennifer Lopez also played a role as a friend and background dancer of Janet Jackson. That's the Way Love Goes was nominated in three categories at the MTV Video Music Awards 1993: "best female music video", "best dance music video" and "best choreography in a music video". The music video appeared in 1994 on Jackson's VHS video album with the album title janet of the same name , on the Design of a Decade collection (1996), on the limited bonus DVD edition of their 2001 album All for You and in 2004 on theirs Video album From janet. to Damita Jo: The Videos .

An alternative version of the music video, the “One Take Version”, takes place in the same hotel room, but only Jackson himself is focused in the entire music video. The music video only appeared on Jackson's VHS video album in 1994 with the album title janet.

'N Sync paid tribute to the music video when they emulated the music video on MTV Icon.
