Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em ( English for: “ Please Hammer, don't hurt them ”) is the third studio album by US rapper MC Hammer . It was released on February 12, 1990 on the Capitol Records and EMI labels . With over 18 million copies sold worldwide and a diamond award in the United States, it is one of the most commercially successful rap albums in history.

Production and samples

MC Hammer himself, Big Louis Burrell and Scott Folks served as executive producers on the album . James Early and Felton Pilot were also involved as co-producers.

Six songs contain samples of songs by other artists. Help the Children samples the track Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) by soul singer Marvin Gaye and Here Comes the Hammer contains elements of the track Super Bad by James Brown . In Pray samples are the title When Doves Cry by Prince and We Care a Lot of the rock band Faith No More included, while U Can not Touch This song Super Freak by Rick James is sampling. Also, Yo !! Sweetness elements of the songs Give It to Me Baby by Rick James and Your Sweetness Is My Weakness by Barry White and in Work This is a sample of the track Let's Work by Prince.

Furthermore, four tracks on the album are cover versions of other titles. Have You Seen Her is originally from the vocal group The Chi-Lites and On Your Face from the band Earth, Wind and Fire . The original of Dancin 'Machine is from the Jackson Five and She's Soft and Wet is a Prince cover.

Cover design

The album cover shows MC Hammer, who wears a black suit, tie and glasses and crosses his arms in front of his body. The lettering MC Hammer is in brown or black at the top of the picture and on the right of the picture is the black title Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em underlaid with the brown letters MC . The background is white, while in the foreground a large blue H extends across the entire cover.

Chart successes and singles

Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em entered the German album charts at number 81 on August 20, 1990 and reached the top position two weeks later at number 14. It was able to stay in the top 100 for a total of 52 weeks. In the USA the album reached the top position in the charts and was able to stay in the top 200 for 108 weeks, of which 21 weeks at number 1. The album also reached the charts in Austria, Switzerland and Great Britain. The sound carrier was ranked 37th in the German annual charts in 1991.

Six songs on the album were released as singles . Of these, the first release U Can't Touch This was particularly successful, which received a gold record in Germany and the USA . The two following singles Have You Seen Her and Pray also climbed high into the charts, while Here Comes the Hammer , Help the Children and Yo !! Sweetness were n't quite as successful.

Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em sold over 18 million copies worldwide, making them one of the most commercially successful rap albums in history. In the United States alone, sales amount to more than ten million copies, for which it received a diamond record (10 times platinum). The album was also internationally successful and received a gold record in Germany for over 250,000 copies sold , while in the UK it was awarded double platinum for more than 600,000 copies sold. Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em also received a gold record in Austria and Switzerland .

At the Grammy Awards in 1991 was Please Hammer, Do not Hurt 'Em in the category Album of the Year nomination, but lost Back on the Block by Quincy Jones . In contrast, the single U Can't Touch This won the award in the Best Rap Solo Performance category.
