Gabriel Hummelberger , also: Hummelberg , Humelberg (* 1487 probably in Ravensburg ; † January 7, 1544 in Feldkirch ) was a German humanist as well as a doctor and botanist .

Gabriel Hummelberger was the son of the shopkeeper and Ravensburger council member Michael Hummelberger. His mother's name was Anna and was a née Kupferschmid from Bludenz . He was the brother of the better-known humanist and philologist Michael Hummelberger , as well as Jacob Hummelberger, who was a merchant in Ravensburg.

He studied medicine in Paris in 1507 , in Montpellier in 1512 and in Bologna in 1515 , where he also received his doctorate and practiced. After returning home, he settled in Swabia. He worked as a city doctor in Isny im Allgäu . In Feldkirch he married Veronika Imgraben in 1518 and called himself artium et medicinae doctor in 1525 . He had three sons and five daughters, among whom are known:

  • Michael Hummelberger, Stadtammann and mayors in Feldkirch
  • Gabriel Hummelberger, doctor of medicine
  • Magdalena, prioress of the Valduna monastery
  • Kunigunde, Abbess of the Valduna Monastery
  • Anna (married Imperial Knight Peter Pappus von Trazberg)

He continued to study medicinal plants and ancient botanical writings and historians, such as Pliny the Elder , Musa , Apuleius and Dioscorides , on whose writings he published various articles and commentaries. He corresponded with Beatus Rhenanus from 1525 at the latest and in 1531 was critical of the Reformation, which he feared would have a devastating cultural impact. He collected and preserved 310 letters from the correspondence of his late brother Michael, thereby preserving them for the history of humanism.
