Michael Hummelberger

Michael Hummelberger , also: Hummelberg , Humelberg (* 1487 in Ravensburg ; † May 19, 1527 ibid) was a German humanist and philologist .

Michael Hummelberger was named after his father (Krämer and Ravensburger council member) and grandfather. His mother's name was Anna and was a née Kupferschmid from Bludenz . He was the brother of the humanist and botanist Gabriel Hummelberger , and Jacob Hummelberger, who was a merchant in Ravensburg.

After attending the Ravensburger Latin School and Heidelberg University (Baccalaureus artium 1503), Michael Hummelberger went to Paris , where he became a close friend of Beatus Rhenanus . In 1505 he received his master's degree , in 1506 and 1511 he held the office of procurator of the German nation at Paris University . From 1514 to 1517 he studied canon law in Rome. Ordained a priest in Constance in 1518 , he became chaplain of the Andreas chaplaincy to St. Michael in Ravensburg in 1521 . Despite sympathy with Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli , he remained Catholic and died unmarried without children.

Hummelberger was best known through his correspondence and contacts with famous humanists, including: Johannes Reuchlin , Konrad Peutinger , Beatus Rhenanus , Erasmus von Rotterdam , Willibald Pirckheimer , Caspar Ursinus Velius , Heinrich Bebel , Johannes Brassicanus , Thomas Anshelm , Joachim Vadian , Christoph Schappeler , Urbanus Rhegius , Johann Froben , Philipp Melanchthon . The main work of the excellent Graecist is a Greek school grammar (published posthumously by Beatus Rhenanus under the title Epitomae grammaticae Graecae ). Hummelberger published the Ausonius in 1517 .
