Ludwig Welti

Ludwig Welti (born October 25, 1904 in Fraxern , † November 7, 1971 in Bregenz ) was a historian and state archivist in Vorarlberg, Austria .

Life

Ludwig Welti comes from a well-educated family for the time. His father Gottlieb Welti, who came from Hohenems , was a teacher in Fraxern. His mother, Josefine Vetter from Lustenau , was the granddaughter of a teacher and the sister of the pastor from Fraxern and Hohenems. His connection to the communities of Lustenau and Hohenems can also be seen in his later work.

After high school in Bregenz, he studied history and geography in Innsbruck and Vienna .

In 1933, Ludwig Welti became head of the newly created Lustenau local group of the Fatherland Front .

In 1940 he was called up for military service. In 1946 he returned from captivity and began his work in the Vorarlberg State Archives on September 1, 1947 , which he carried out until December 31, 1969 - from 1963 as scientific director.

Ludwig Welti was followed by Karl Heinz Burmeister (1970–2001) as state archivist .

The history of the Counts of Hohenems was the thematic focus in Welti's work. The two extensive monographs on Jakob Hannibal I von Hohenems and Kaspar von Hohenems are particularly worth mentioning . He is also represented in homeland books (Lustenauer Heimatbuch, Montafoner Heimatbuch, Hohenems Geschichte), encyclopedias and commemorative publications. In Hohenems today the Ludwig-Welti-Straße commemorates the work of the historian.

Welti also dealt with the history of the rule of Blumenegg . and he left over 160 titles with historical works.
