Peter Kater (born May 28, 1958 in Munich ) is an American New Age musician. He is one of the most successful pianists of his genre since the 2000s and a two-time Grammy winner.

biography

Kater's parents are from Germany and immigrated to the United States when he was four years old. He grew up in New Jersey and took piano lessons as a child. He later studied classical music but then turned to rock 'n' roll and moved to Boulder , Colorado when he was 18 to work as a piano player and pianist. He composed and improvised his own music and released his first album Spirit in 1983 on the Point of Light label .

From 1987 onwards numerous other albums followed, often several in a year. He wrote music for television documentaries and in 1990 recorded Natives, the first of a series of albums with R. Carlos Nakai . The musician, who descended from the Navajo and Ute , is considered a leading player on the Indian flute . For their joint album Migration , in which other musicians were also involved, they received the NAIRD (National Association of Independent Record Distributors) award for the best new age album.

In the 1990s he worked several times for the Discovery Channel and in 1997 he founded his own label Earth Sea in rural Virginia , where he had settled . He publishes solo piano music and collaborations with up to five musicians, mainly with new age, meditation and inspiration music, including short and long composed pieces as well as improvisations up to CD length. In addition, several albums with classic Christmas carols were released. There are also numerous compositions for film and television as well as incidental music for Broadway performances.

His artistic breakthrough came in 2003 with the album Red Moon , for which he received his first nomination for a Grammy in the category Best New Age Album the following year . After that, he was nominated almost every year, from 2012 to 2018 there were seven nominations in a row. In 2018 he was finally awarded the award for the first time for Dancing on Water . Two years later he won his second Grammy with Wings . He was nominated 14 times from 2003 to 2020.
