Much to the displeasure of Paul, who was injured in the war and can no longer work as a dancer and now works as a puppeteer. Marco invites you to eat in his car, but there are still a few workers who know Marco's preference for young women jostle in. Schlegel gives Lili work, but when she tampered with Marco's utensils and thus his magic tricks fail, she is fired again. While Lili walks past Paul's puppet theater , she is drawn into a conversation by a hand puppet , during which she laments her suffering. When the doll invites Lili to stay with them, she agrees.

Second act

Lili's collaboration makes the show more successful. Paul and his colleague Jacquat renovate the theater and design new program items. Paul becomes increasingly jealous of Marco as Lili follows his performance every evening. When Marco's assistant Rosalie is unavailable, he offers Lili the job. Paul doesn't want to let Lili go and asks her to rehearse the new numbers with him. During the rehearsals there is an argument, in the course of which he takes Lili and kisses her. When there is a dispute between Marco and Paul later, he also hits Lili, she turns away and runs away. When she passes the puppet theater, she is approached again by a puppet who expresses the wish to go with her. Lili pulls the curtain aside and sees Paul. He admits that he can only express his feelings through the dolls. She puts on a doll and hugs Paul.
