Paul William Gallico (born July 26, 1897 in New York , NY , USA , † July 15, 1976 in Antibes , France ) was an American writer .

Life

Paul Gallico was born in New York to the Austrian violinist Hortense Erlich and the Italian composer, music teacher and pianist Paolo Gallico, who emigrated to the New World in 1895 . As a teenager, he made several trips to Europe with his parents .

In 1916, Gallico began studying at Columbia University , graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1921 , after having served in World War I for a year and a half as a soldier . He then worked as a journalist for the National Board of Motion Picture Review , six months later as a film critic for the New York Daily News , later in the sports department and from 1923 he had his own column there . He became one of the best-known and most highly paid US sports reporters who, in order to gain the necessary expertise, practiced numerous sports himself.

He turned increasingly away from sports in the 1930s, writing short stories , many of which appeared in the Saturday Evening Post . Many of his stories and novels were later adapted for cinema and TV. From 1943 to 1946 he worked as a war correspondent , and then spent the rest of his life as a freelance writer, living alternately in Great Britain , Mexico , Liechtenstein and Monaco . Inspired by his children's story The Snow Goose , the English rock band Camel recorded an album of the same name in 1975.

Paul Gallico was married four times and had several children. He died on July 15, 1976 in Antibes at the age of 78.

Gallico was the founder of the traditional American amateur boxing tournament Golden Gloves , which produced such well-known winners as Joe Louis , Muhammad Ali and Óscar de la Hoya . In 2009 the writer was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
