Steve Cochran (actually Robert Alexander Cochran , born May 25, 1917 in Eureka , California , † June 15, 1965 off the coast of Guatemala ) was an American actor .

Life

Cochran grew up in Wyoming where his father, a lumberjack, moved in the 1920s. After attending the University of Wyoming , Cochran played from 1939 on various theatrical stages, later on Broadway. He made his cinema debut in 1945 after being signed by Samuel Goldwyn . Mainly used in westerns and crime films, Cochran was often committed to villain roles, and occasionally also powerfully gripping heroes. Among other things, he was seen as an internal competitor of James Cagney in the gangster classic Jump in Death . Cochran probably set himself the most artistically demanding task in The Scream (1957) by Michelangelo Antonioni .

When his first contract expired in 1953, Cochran and friends founded Robert Alexander Productions. From then on, he also played television roles as a freelance actor until his death, including in series such as Bonanza , Twilight Zone , The People of the Shiloh Ranch and The Untouchables .

death

Cochran was married three times: from 1935 to the divorce in 1946 with Florence Lockwood (from this marriage there was a child), from 1946 to the divorce in 1948 with the actress Fay McKenzie and from 1961 to his death with Jonna Jensen.

In June 1965, Cochran died of natural causes on his yacht off the Pacific coast of Guatemala, probably from a lung infection. Three women also present on the boat floated with the corpse for ten days on the open sea because they could not operate it. The boat drifted ashore in Guatemala. This story is retold by Paul Auster in his book Sunset Park , in which two characters also deal with the film The Best Years of Our Lives , in which Cochran played a supporting role.
