Robert Hudson Walker (born October 13, 1918 in Salt Lake City , Utah , † August 28, 1951 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Walker was the son of a newspaper publisher in Salt Lake City. He studied acting in New York in 1938 and married the young actress Jennifer Jones in 1939 , who established herself in Hollywood through the film The Song of Bernadette in 1943 . In the same year, Walker also received his first major film roles in Hollywood, after he had not been mentioned in the credits for his first three small film roles in 1939. In his films in the 1940s, Walker mainly adopted the role of the nice young man next door.

Walker and Jones were married until 1944 and had two children. Their son, Robert Walker junior , followed in his parents' footsteps and also started an acting career in the early 1960s. In July 1948 he married Barbara Ford (1922–1985), the daughter of director John Ford , but the marriage ended in divorce in December of the same year. In his last marriage, he was married to the actress Hanna Hertelendy (1919–2008) from July 1949 until his death.

Robert Walker died a month after the premiere of his most famous film The Stranger on the Train by Alfred Hitchcock . In this film he offered a memorable portrayal of a psychopathic mother son from a wealthy family who tries to convince another train passenger to murder. After having been alcoholic for a long time, he died of an allergic overreaction after taking medication while filming the film My Son John , directed by Leo McCarey . Close-ups of Walker from The Stranger on the Train were used to complete Leo McCarey's drama .

A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame ( 1707 Vine Street ) commemorates the actor .
