Denis O'Dea

Denis O'Dea (born April 26, 1905 in Dublin , Ireland , † November 5, 1978 ibid) was an Irish theater and film actor .

Life

After initially working as an insurance salesman, Denis O'Dea turned to acting in the 1920s. He was a longtime member of the ensemble of the Abbey Theater in Dublin, where he played many leading roles. His work there brought him a variety of cinema roles, including three films by director John Ford . O'Dea played police officers particularly often, for example in Carol Reed's film drama Kleines Herz in Not (1948) or in the film noir Niagara (1953) alongside Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotten . But he was also seen in roles as a priest or officer. In the Disney adventure film Treasure Island (1950), based on the novel of the same name by Robert Louis Stevenson , he played the role of the level-headed ship's doctor Dr. Livesey.

O'Dea was married to Irish actress Siobhán McKenna from 1946 until his death . Their son Donnacha O'Dea (* 1948) is a former swimmer and now a professional poker player.
