Siobhan McKenna

Siobhán McKenna ( actually: Siobhán Giollamhuire Nic Cionnaith ; born May 24, 1923 in Belfast , Northern Ireland , † November 16, 1986 in Dublin , Ireland ) was an Irish film and theater actress .

biography

McKenna grew up in a typical Irish family where Irish was spoken. From 1940 she gained her first experience as an actress in a Gaelic theater in Galway . In 1947 she was on stage for the first time in London , followed by her debut on Broadway in the USA in 1954 . Although she also took advantage of film offers, the theater remained McKenna's world; she was nominated twice for the Tony Award .

McKenna's best-known films include King of Kings from 1961 and the 1965 feature film Doctor Zhivago , in which she played the foster mother of the title character played by Omar Sharif .

McKenna married Irish actor Denis O'Dea in 1956 , with whom she was married until his death in 1978. The two had a son, Donnacha O'Dea, who is now a professional poker player . Siobhán McKenna was diagnosed with lung cancer, so she had to undergo an operation, from which she died shortly afterwards. She was 63 years old.
