Horst Lemke

Horst Lemke (born June 30, 1922 in Berlin ; † May 10, 1985 in Brione ) was a German illustrator and graphic artist .

Shortly before graduating from high school, Horst Lemke had to leave school because of drawing a Goebbels caricature. He studied from 1939 to 1941 at the State University of Fine Arts in Berlin with the graphic artist Gerhard Ulrich. Then he became a soldier. From 1945 to 1957 he worked in Heidelberg as a commercial artist and illustrator for book and magazine publishers. From 1957 until his death he lived in Brione near Locarno ( Switzerland ).

After the death of Walter Trier in 1951, Horst Lemke illustrated Erich Kästner 's children's books , with whom he had a personal friendship. Among the other authors whose books he illustrated are Max Kruse , Astrid Lindgren , the Brothers Grimm , Heinrich Maria Denneborg , James Krüss and Josef Göhlen .

Lemke was proposed for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1960. He received the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1961 and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1983 .
