Nerio Bernardi

Nerio Bernardi (actually Nerino Bernardi , born July 23, 1899 in Bologna , † January 12, 1971 in Rome ) was an Italian actor , drama teacher and voice actor .

Life

Bernardi first began studying medicine and mathematics , but then turned to film when he accepted two films for the newly founded production company “Felsina Film” in his hometown. After their publication he was in demand as a newly discovered “young lover” and made many more films until 1922. Then he made his stage debut at the Teatro degli Italiani under the direction of Lucio D'Ambra. In the following years he played on numerous Italian stages and worked with famous directors such as Max Reinhardt (including a 1935 production of William Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice ), Luchino Visconti and Pier Paolo Pasolini and alongside the female stars of his time, such as Alda Borelli , Andreina Rossi and Tatjana Pavlova .

In 1934, Bernardi resumed his film engagements. In his film career spanning more than 50 years, character actor Bernardi has often embodied mythological figures and historical personalities such as Agamemnon ( Adamo ed Eva and The Battle for Troy ), Alexander Graham Bell ( Antonio Meucci , director: Enrico Guazzoni ), David ( The Shepherd King ), Cicero ( Julius Caesar, tyrant of Rome ), Belisarius ( Theodora, empress of Byzantium ), and Cardinal Richelieu ( Zorro and the three musketeers ). He played alongside international stars such as Gérard Philipe ( Fanfan der Husar , Die Kartause von Parma ), Simone Signoret ( Thérèse Raquin after Émile Zola ) and Fernandel ( Mamsell Nitouche ).

When the Second World War broke out , Bernardi was in Spain to film. Like other Italian colleagues (including Emilio Cigoli ), he initially stayed there and increasingly worked as a voice actor. Even after his return to Italy he remained loyal to this activity and lent his deep and intense voice to Cedric Hardwicke ( cocktail for a corpse ), Basil Rathbone ( Under the Sign of Zorro ), George Sanders ( Adventure in the South Seas ), Donald Crisp ( Sun green was my valley ) and Henry Travers ( In the shadow of doubt ).

In addition, from 1952 Bernardi worked as a teacher at the Silvio D'Amico drama school in Rome.
