The Bacchantes (original title: Le baccanti ) is a mythological antique film from 1961 , which was made in an Italian - French co-production. The title refers to the tragedy The Bacchae by the Greek poet Euripides . The work is also known as Dionysus and the Bacchantes .

content

Thebes is ravaged by a terrible drought, as the inhabitants no longer pay homage to Dionysus. The seer Teiresias ascribes this to the anger of Dionysus, to whom King Pentheus refuses to pay his due tribute. The rulers decide to use a politically unpleasant young lady, Manto, as a human sacrifice for reconciliation. Her lover is Lacdamos, who ekes out his existence as a slave, but in fact - unknown to him - is the rightful king, because Pentheos is a usurper . To save his beloved, Lacdamos asks Dirce, the tyrant's fiancée, for help. Her request for mercy is answered by Dionysus: he himself comes to Thebes in human form, charms the ladies, uses his divine powers and spins the threads in such a way that the people rebel against the rulers. Pentheos' troops have no chance against the Bacchantes. Dionysus is reinstalled as a person of worship, and so it rains again. He returns to Olympus; Lacdamos and Manto will rule in Thebes.

criticism

"To call the whole thing solid kitsch would be inadmissible flattery."

"Italian" historical film "whose follies do not become more original by referring to Euripides."
