Career
Derek Armstrong began his career as a hockey player with the Sudbury Wolves , for which he was active from 1990 to 1993 in the Ontario Hockey League . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1992 in the sixth round as a total of 128th player by the New York Islanders , for whom he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1993/94 season . However, this was his only use this season, as he played the rest of the time for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles from the International Hockey League . After he played exclusively for the Denver Grizzlies from the IHL the following year , Armstrong played in the following two seasons for both the Islanders and the Worcester IceCats from the American Hockey League , as well as the IHL team Utah Grizzlies . On July 28, 1997, the Ottawa Senators took the attacker under contract, for which he then scored two goals in nine games. The right-handed shooter spent most of the 1997/98 season with the Detroit Vipers from the IHL, and as a loan player with the Hartford Wolf Pack from the AHL.
On August 10, 1998 Armstrong was also hired as a free agent by the New York Rangers , for whom he was as well as for their farm team, the Hartford Wolf Pack, active in the following three years. He then played for a season in the Swiss National League A before he was transferred from the New York Rangers to the Los Angeles Kings in the summer of 2002 , for whom he has since played regularly in the NHL. Only during the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season was Armstrong in Switzerland with HC Servette Genève and the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers under contract.
From September 2009, the Canadian played for St. Louis Blues and signed a two-year contract that was valid for both the NHL and the AHL. After the 2009-10 season , Armstrong ended his active career due to a concussion.
In 2011 Amstrong began to work as an ice hockey coach and initially looked after the Boulder Junior Bison in the junior league Western States Hockey League for one season . For the 2012/13 season he moved to the Denver Cutthroats in the Central Hockey League and from the 2013/14 season there, in addition to his position as head coach, also held the position of Director of Hockey Operations . In January 2014, the Canadian also took up the position of the resigned Ben Rifkin as president of the team. After a successful sporting season with the Cutthroats, he was honored in the CHL as coach of the year for the 2013/14 season and decided to exclusively act as president and general manager of the club from now on.
