Desperado - The Mysterious Avenger (original title: Il magnifico texano ) is a spaghetti western , which in 1967 by Luigi Capuano was staged and at Zorro tells reminiscent history. The film, also shown as The Man from Texas , premiered on March 13, 1986 on the private television broadcaster RTL plus .

action

The Mexican town of Santa Clara is ruled by a band of robbers, especially the Stark brothers, against whom the sheriff is powerless, as Judge Wilkins repeatedly blames the Mexican rural population for criminal incidents. In fact, the judge presides over the group of criminals who plunder the area with massacres and other acts of violence until a mysterious stranger called the Desperado shows up to crack down on the injustice. Behind the mask is Manuel Lopez, the grown-up only survivor of a family massacre that occurred 15 years ago.

Manuel brings justice back to the area, though his love for Judge Wilkins' daughter Evelyn doesn't make matters any easier. However, with the help of the sheriff and several Mexican friends, he is able to eliminate the gang while Judge Wilkins is killed by his maddened wife. Manuel and Evelyn face a peaceful life.

criticism

“This great Texan (that's the original title) could justifiably be called Zorro, because much of the story is reminiscent of this famous hero in the mask. In short, the whole story is told in a richly schematic way and yet seems very familiar to the viewer. ”,“ B. Duffort ”in the French“ season '71 ”. The lexicon of international film saw the work in a tradition of the director: "Italo-Western according to the usual scheme, whose director in the 1960s specialized in coat and epee as well as trivial monumental films."

Christian Keßler criticized that the film unfortunately lacks style and polish. "The social conflict that underlies all of these Zorro stories does not support entire films on its own, and there is simply too little that is surprising for the tension to last for the entire 100 minutes."

Remarks

The German version of the film was released unabridged on DVD.

As is often the case in films of the time and from the Mediterranean, the actors hide behind sometimes imaginative pseudonyms.
