Hercules, the hero of Carthage (original title: La vendetta di Ursus ) is a mythological film produced in Italy and directed by Luigi Capuano in 1961 .

action

Hercules, who had settled as a farmer, is called with his little brother Dario to the Princess Sira, who wants to leave the land of Lycien and thanks for her help in the past. However, their camp is attacked by a group of soldiers led by Captain Andros from Karia. Hercules can drive them away, but they prepare a raft as a trap for the princess. In fact, she has an accident and Hercules rescues her from the river. Everyone arrives at the court of King Zagro, who wants to marry Sira. Hercules and Dario leave the princess there, not suspecting anything of the king's plans or of the jealous Sabra who ordered the murder in the camp.

After the returnees discover that the raft had been tampered with, they turn back again. In a tavern they meet a resistance group led by Manlio, whom they help against Zagro's soldiers who suddenly appear. Dario goes to Kiria alone and is captured; Hercules can be defeated to find him in prison. Manlio's rebels outsmart the guards, free Dario and Hercules turning a millwheel.

After an unsuccessful conversation with Alteo - Hercules is even taken prisoner again - he cannot prevent Zagro's wedding with Sira, which is now taking place; Meanwhile, Zagro has had everyone who stood in his way at court. Hercules, who has escaped from prison, finds Alteo dead and is mistaken for his murderer. During Zagro's visit to Licia, now part of his realm, Zagro is confronted by Hercules; he gets involved in a divine judgment.

Hercules passed all the trials; the final battle between Hercules and the rebels takes place against the troops of Zagro. The latter is personally killed by Hercules, who can now marry the newly widowed Sira.

criticism

"A weak-chested Remmidemmishow, for which you wouldn't even have needed a scriptwriter."

- Dictionary of fantasy films

The lexicon of international films saw a "trivial sandal film without any special features."

Remarks

Another epic hero from the Italian peplum loses his identity - here the Ursus of the original version becomes Hercules .

Instead of in Carthage , the scenery takes place in ancient Lycia and Caria , i.e. in Asia Minor . The North African Carthage, which even more centuries later - according to ancient tradition 814 BC. - was founded, is not even mentioned.
