Abandoned (original title: Abbandono ) is an Italian drama by Mario Mattòli from 1940. The film was released in German cinemas in 1942 in a dubbed version. After the war it was no longer shown in Germany.

action

At the beginning of the 19th century the eldest son of the noble Courier family, a sea captain, marries a middle-class woman, Anna, whom he met in Trinidad. The family, especially her husband's brother, greets her with great coolness. While her husband is absent, Anna allows herself to be accused of the affair that her sister-in-law Maria actually committed because she wants to protect her. After his return, her husband throws her out of the house. Anna can only prove her innocence many years later and after the tragic accidental death of her sister-in-law.

criticism

The film has many qualities, "Volpone" stated in Il Bertoldo on November 1, 1940: the quality of the production and equipment are more than accurate, the actors live up to their good reputation and, after all, the Mattolis directing is commercial but clever and rich in nuances.

Michelangelo Antonioni accused the film of not being realistic enough.

Remarks

The film was shot in Cinecittà and presented at the Venice Film Festival in 1940.
