Susan Hampshire CBE (born May 12, 1937 (according to some sources: 1938) in London ) is a British actress .

biography

Susan Hampshire has been on stage in London since childhood and made her film debut in a small role in the drama Die Schwindlerin as early as 1947. From 1959 she appeared regularly in front of the camera. At first she was the “fragile beauty” in films such as Sidney J. Furie's war drama During One Night (1961), the psychological thriller Grasp from the Dark with Albert Finney , the family film The Three Lives of Thomasina with Patrick McGoohan or the musical comedy Wonderful Life - Kiss me with music with Cliff Richard (all 1964). In the French comedy Paris in August(1965) by director Pierre Granier-Deferre , her future husband, she played a mature, modern young woman who turns the head of a family man. The film also featured a nude scene from Susan Hampshire. During this time, she was offered contracts by three Hollywood production companies, which she declined because she was advised to make more or less complex cosmetic changes.

Susan Hampshire became popular primarily as a busy actress in British television productions. Her best-known role was that of Fleur in the 26 fifty-minute episodes of the BBC film adaptation of the Forsyte saga based on the John Galsworthy (1967) novel trilogy with Eric Porter , for which she won an Emmy . More Emmys she earned for her performances of "Becky Sharp" in the miniseries Vanity Fair on the novel Vanity Fair by William Thackeray (1967) and " Sarah Churchill " in the miniseries The First Churchills (1969). Between 2000 and 2005 she played a leading role in the hit, Scotland- based series Monarch of the Glen .

Susan Hampshire was married to Pierre Granier-Deferre from 1967 until the divorce in 1974, with whom she has a son. A daughter died as a child. She has been married to the Greek impresario Eddie Kulukundis since 1981 .

In 1982 she described her long struggle with dyslexia in her autobiography Susan's Story . Susan Hampshire was inducted into the Order of the British Empire in 1995 for her efforts to educate the public about dyslexia, its psychological implications and treatment options .
