Kypseli ( Greek Κυψέλη ( f. Sg. )) Is one of the most populous and densely populated districts of the Greek capital Athens and is located in the north of the city, in the 6th district.

history

The development of Kypseli into a city began in the 1930s with the construction of single-family houses and the first modern apartment blocks in Athens. The style of this development was influenced by the Bauhaus and Art Deco . Generous green spaces such as Pedion Areos and Fokionos Negri Street made the district with many apartment blocks from the 1930s, 1950s and 1960s attractive for the middle and upper middle class. Large shopping districts were Kypselis Square (official name Plateia Kanari), Patission Street, Kypselis Street, Fokionos Negri Street and Amerikis Square. In the 1980s, more and more immigrants moved into the cellars and the small apartments of the buildings, which over time caused the value of the properties to decline. The commercial areas remained Patission, Kypselis St, Kerkyras, Spetson and the areas around Fokionos Negri Street as well as Plateia Kypseli (Central Main Square), which has been converted into a pedestrian zone and has numerous cafes.

Infrastructure

Work is currently underway on an underground station that will connect Kypseli to the capital's underground network in 2022 (line number 4).

health care

The district has numerous state and private doctors of various specialties as well as several private hospitals such as B. Doctors Hospital or Attiko Clinic (not to be confused with the university hospital of the same name in Athens). There are also several private 24-hour health companies that make home visits. Other hospitals are in the immediate vicinity, such as in the neighboring district of Ampelokipi.

economy

The economy in Kypseli consists largely of hospitality, retail and service sectors. Several large, partly international corporations such as PM Trade & Service (PMTS for short), Fokionos Records, McProvider and Domino's Pizza have settled here.

Alexis Tsipras

The former Greek Prime Minister has had his permanent residence in Ano Kypseli for many years.
