Ambelokipi (Athens)

Ambelokipi or Ampelokipi ( Greek Αμπελόκηποι ) is a district of the Greek capital Athens .

location

Ambelokipi is located about 2.5 km northeast of the center of Athens, directly on the Lykavittos . The neighboring neighborhoods include Girokomio , Ellinoroson , Goudi , Ilisia , Koudouriotika , Gyzi and Polygono .

history

Before the Greek War of Independence at the beginning of the 19th century, Ambelokipi was a small village a few kilometers from the city limits of Athens. The population rose sharply as a result of the Asia Minor catastrophe in 1922 when many of the refugees were resettled in this area.

Today Ambelokipi, together with Kypseli, is one of the most densely populated areas of Athens.

Ambelokipi is served by the Athens Metro . Line 2 has two stops at Ambelokipi and Panormo .

With the Leoforos Alexandras (west-east) and the Leoforos Kifisias (north-south) two of the most important streets of Athens intersect in the district.

Ambelokipi is the home of Panathinaikos, the largest and most successful sports club in Greece with over 20 sports departments. The association founded in 1908 carries u. a. to this day, the home games of his football department in the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium , located directly at the Leoforos Alexandras . This is one of the most historic in the country and in the past was the venue for final matches for the Greek club cup or the home of the Greek national team .

With Ampelokipoi BC, the district has another basketball club that was also represented in the top Greek league in the mid-1990s.

The 103 m high Pyrgos Athinon is the tallest building in Greece in Ambelokipi. Also in Ambelokipi is the Pyrgos Apollon , the highest residential building in the country at 80 m.

Other important buildings are the Areopagus , the Athens Police Headquarters, the Hilton Hotel and a number of hospitals and clinics.
