The Leoforos Alexandras ( Greek Λεωφόρος Αλεξάνδρας ) is an avenue and main thoroughfare in Athens . The street was named in honor of the daughter of the Greek king George I, Princess Alexandra of Greece, later Alexandra of Greece and Denmark .

location

The Leoforos Alexandras is located north of Athens city center. It runs over a length of approx. 3 km in a west-east direction and is bordered in the west by road 28is Oktomvriou (October 28) and in the east by Leoforos Kifisias .

The districts that are directly on the street include u. a. Pedio tou Areos , Exarchia , Gyzi and Ambelokipi .

The Leoforos Alexandras forms the northern border of the so-called Daktylios , an inner-city zone with restricted mobility for individual traffic .

building

The buildings along the Leoforos Alexandras have a predominantly residential or commercial use. There are also a number of public buildings on this.

The most important or famous buildings include u. a. the Austrian Archaeological Institute Athens , the Areopagus , the Court of Appeal, the Athens Police Headquarters, the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium and a number of hospitals and embassies .

Parks and squares

With the Pedio tou Areos , the Leoforos Alexandras runs along one of the largest parks in the Greek capital. The park, designed in 1934 and completely renovated in 2010, is located at the western end of the street. The Platia Egiptou borders directly on these . With the Platia Argentinis Dimokratias , the street has another park or green area.

traffic

The Leoforos Alexandras has three lanes, with one lane per lane being reserved for local public transport: these lanes may only be used by buses and taxis . At its eastern end, the street is connected to Line 3 of the Athens Metro . Its western end is in the immediate vicinity of the Viktoria station , which belongs to line 1. The new construction of the currently planned line 4 provides for another stop directly on Leoforos Alexandras.
