The Pyrgos Apollon ( Greek Πύργος Απόλλων ) is a high-rise building in the Athens district Ambelokipi . With a height of 80 m, it is the tallest residential building in Greece and the third tallest building in the country after the Pyrgos Athinon and the Pyrgos tou Pirea .
location
The Pyrgos Apollon is located in the Ambelokipi district of Athens, approx. 3 km northeast of the city center on Platia Kanellopoulou ( Πλατεία Κανελλόπουλου 'Kanellopoulos Square' ) and the Panormou metro station on Athens Metro Line 3 . The Pyrgos Athinon , the tallest hotel building in Greece, the Hotel President and the Areopagus , the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium and the Goudi Olympic Complex are in the immediate vicinity .
history
In general, the construction of landmarks or conspicuous solitary buildings is not allowed in Athens in order not to endanger the prominent position of the Acropolis in the cityscape. As a result, the maximum permitted total height of buildings was 35 m until 1968. In 1985 this upper limit was reduced to 27 m. During the Greek military dictatorship this rule was not observed and even subsidies and loans were given for high-rise buildings.
The Pyrgos Apollon (for "Tower Apollon") was built from 1968 to 1971, with completion not taking place until 1973. On the roof garden there was a bar and a swimming pool, which is not used today, only offices and shops on the basement floor. Although the tower was designed as a residential building, many apartments are now used as offices or medical practices.
construction
The Pyrgos Apollon is a solid building. The building is divided into two parts, each of which can be accessed independently via a core with a pair of elevators. There is a swimming pool on the roof .
