The Pyrgos Athinon ( Greek Πύργος Αθηνών ) in the Athens district of Ambelokipi consists of two high-rise buildings. While Pyrgos Athinon 1 has a height of 103 m, Pyrgos Athinon 2 is significantly lower with 65 m. When it was completed in 1971, it was the second tallest building in the Balkans . To date, it is the tallest building in Greece .

location

The Pyrgos Athinon is located in the Athens district of Ambelokipi approx. 3 km northeast of the city center on the Leoforos Mesogion. In the immediate vicinity are the Areopagus , the Megaro Mousikis , the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium and the city mountain Athens Lykavittos .

history

In general, the construction of landmarks or conspicuous solitary buildings is not allowed in Athens in order not to endanger the prominent position of the Acropolis in the cityscape. As a result, the maximum permitted total height of buildings was 35 m until 1968. In 1985 this upper limit was reduced to 27 m. Between 1968 and 1971 the Pyrgos Athinon was built during the Greek military dictatorship . With its completion, it replaced the 65 m high Hilton Hotel as the tallest building in Greece to date.

The groundbreaking took place on June 13, 1968. In the following year the shell was completed. In 1971 all the work was finally completed and the building was completed.

In 1990 an antenna system was installed on the roof of Pyrgos Athinon 1.

construction

The Pyrgos Athinon is a skeleton building.

The two towers are connected by a connecting structure at the level of the first floor. The two 25- and 12-storey towers respectively rest on three basement floors, which, in addition to an underground car park, contain storage and technical rooms.

Users

The two towers are used by a number of service companies. Including z. B. Alpha Bank and the insurance company Interamerican. In the 1970s there was a shopping center on the lower floors, these areas were later converted into offices.
