The Pyrgos tou Pirea ( Greek Πύργος του Πειραιά , English Piraeus Tower ) is an unfinished and practically unused high-rise on the port front of Piraeus, which it has dominated for 40 years. It is the second tallest building in the greater Athens / Piraeus area after the Pyrgos Athinon in Athens. In 2020 it was leased to a private operator who is planning to complete it.

The Piraeus Tower is located on Akti Posidonos ( Poseidon Bank ) directly at the passenger port of Piraeus on the site of the urban market that was demolished a few years earlier. In the immediate vicinity is the Agia Triada Cathedral.

history

Construction of the high-rise began in 1972 during the Greek military dictatorship . In 1974, after the construction of the shell and the overthrow of military rule, work was stopped. Until 1983 only the concrete skeleton stood. Then the facades were clad with glass and metal. The three lowest floors were used for official, educational and commercial purposes, the other floors remained unused without interior fittings.

The Pyrgos tou Pirea is a skeleton building. The design comes from Ioannis Vikelas, who also designed the Pyrgos Athinon .

According to the original plan, the port authority was to have its seat in the building, and it was also intended as a trade and shipping center.

In the late 1990s and thereafter, several plans were made to complete the building, but without success. The lack of parking is seen as the main obstacle to use, while concerns about statics are considered to have been resolved.

Since the end of 2018, the city of Piraeus has tried again to use the building. It was advertised for lease to a private investor for 99 years. The lease should be at least 900,000 euros per year. In May 2020, a contract was signed with Cante / Prontea, which provides for a lease of EUR 1,010,000 per year and a staggering of 2%.
