Severino Dias de Oliveira , known as Sivuca , (born May 26, 1930 in Itabaiana , Paraíba ; † December 14, 2006 in João Pessoa , Paraíba), was a multi-instrumentalist and one of the most famous accordion players in Brazil , as well as a composer and arranger for orchestra and singers .

biography

He started playing the accordion at the age of 9 and was soon making small appearances. At the age of 15 Sivuca moved to Recife , the capital of Pernambuco , where he took his stage name and began his musical career in radio. At the age of 18 he became a student of Guerra Peixe , with whom he studied arrangement and composition. In 1950 he recorded his first album with his partner Humberto Teixeira and wrote his first successful composition Adeus Maria Fulô . In 1955 Sivuca moved to Rio de Janeiro to work on radio and television. In the following years trips to France and Portugal followed .

In 1964 Sivuca moved to New York , where he stayed for 12 years. There he worked with Hermeto Pascoal , Airto Moreira , Miriam Makeba and Glorinha Gadelha , who became his wife, among others . Together with her, the composition Feira de Mangaio was created , which is considered a classic of Forró .

In the 1970s, Sivuca's popularity grew. He recorded a number of records and made many concert tours through various countries until his death. His repertoire included Choros , Frevos , Forros , Jazz , Baiao , classical music or blues .

At the age of 76 he died of lung cancer.
