Michael Cerveris (born November 6, 1960 in Bethesda , Maryland ) is an American stage actor , film actor , singer and guitarist . He has appeared in many musicals and plays, several of them by Stephen Sondheim , such as the musicals Assassins and Sweeney Todd . In 2004, Cerveris received the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his role as John Wilkes Booth in Assassins . In 2015 he won his second Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for the role of Bruce Bechde in Fun Home .

Life

Cerveris was born in Bethesda, Maryland and raised in Huntington, West Virginia. His mother Marsha Laycock was a dancer, his father Michael Cerveris, a music professor. In 1979 he finished school at Phillips Exeter Academy, and in 1983 he graduated from Yale University with a cum laude degree in drama and speech training .

Cerveris made his Broadway debut in 1993 in The Who's Tommy , in which he played the narrator Tommy. For this role, Cerveris received a Tony Award nomination (Best Supporting Actor in a Musical) , a Drama League Award nomination, and received the Theater World Award and the Original Cast Grammy. In 2004 Cerveris played John Wilkes Booth in the Broadway musical Assassins and won the Tony Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award. In 2015 he won his second Tony Award for his role in Fun Home .

In 2017 he took on the role of Professor Pyg in the fourth season of the Gotham television series .

Cerveris also took on roles in film and television again and again, with the embodiment of Frank in The Mexican and the observer "September" and Donald in Fringe - borderline cases of the FBI .
