action
A vampire epidemic inundates the United States, leaving death and destruction behind. Anyone who is bitten by a vampire dies and returns as a vampire. The family of the teenager Martin is killed by a vampire, he himself survived thanks to a mysterious stranger. The taciturn stranger calls himself Mister and takes care of Martins. Together they drive north in a battered convertible in the hope that the vampires cannot exist there because of their cold-bloodedness. Mister instructs Martin how to fight with the stake. In order to kill a vampire, it is necessary to pierce his heart, break his spine or destroy his brain.
On the way to the north - vampires prefer the warmer areas of the continent - they are joined by a nun, ex-soldier Willie and the pregnant singer Belle. In addition to the danger of being attacked by vampires, they have to be careful of the street gang of the unscrupulous Jebedia, which is up to mischief in view of the anarchic structures in the country. For example, the nun is imprisoned for a few days and is raped by Jebedia. The mister tied him to a tree as punishment and left him to the wandering vampires.
Willie, an outlawed member of the Jebedia clan, reports that Jebedia's Brotherhood has even attacked Washington by dropping vampires on positions loyal to the government. During a rest in a small town, the sectarians again drop vampires from helicopters, which cause a massacre. The five of them flee into the wooded mountains. Martin feels at home in the group, as it represents a family substitute for him. He is particularly caring for Belle, who is now heavily pregnant. Despite the cold weather, they are attacked again by vampires. These particularly strong berserk vampires cannot be knocked out by a stab in the heart because of their massive bone armor. The nun commits suicide before the vampires can catch up with her. The rest of the group take refuge deeper in the woods.
When Willie disappears and is found hanging in a tree, Mister realizes that a particularly intelligent vampire must be at work here. The three survivors continue to flee. However, Belle is kidnapped shortly afterwards. Mister and Martin follow their trail and find them tied up in a shed. The over-vampire finally shows himself: It's Jebedia. He mocks the two and explains that by voluntarily accusing the vampires of feeding himself, he kept his intelligence. When he bites Belle, sentencing her to death, Mister and Martin attack him. Mister is badly injured, but in the end Martin manages to kill Jebedia. Martin then kills Belle so that she doesn't turn into a vampire, which upsets him very much.
On the further way north, Mister and Martin find accommodation with Peggy, a young woman who lives alone in a motel. She has killed several vampires with a crossbow, but one of them, a former classmate of Peggy's, always manages to survive. On the spur of the moment, Martin marches outside and kills him in close combat with his stake.
The next morning the three want to go further north, to the mysterious metropolis "New Eden", where supposedly there are no vampires. When Martin and Peggy wake up the next morning, however, Mister is gone. All he left behind was his skull-shaped chain that Martin found on the rear-view mirror of the pickup with which they came.

criticism
"Rough horror film in the tradition of the vampire subgenre, which makes fun of taking styled teen vampires with gel hairstyles ad absurdum."
Christian Ihle from taz.blogs is of the opinion that the fight scenes with the undead do not match the otherwise depressing atmosphere of the road movie. Michael Schleeh also criticizes the fact that the mood changes “ permanently between a melancholy apocalypse mood and an invasion scenario ”. Marcus Littwin, on the other hand, describes Vampire Nation as a first-class end-time vampire film that positively stands out from the masses. He considers dialogues and scenes of violence to be well worked out - the latter are not gutted excessively, but blend in harmoniously with the overall picture. Due to the short storyline, the tension remains throughout.
