Billy Porter (born September 21, 1969 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American actor , singer and composer . He is also active as a playwright and director .

Life

Billy Porter is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University's School Of Drama .

His career began on Broadway , where he appeared in various plays over several years, including in Miss Saigon as John in 1991 and in Smokey Joe's Cafe in 1995 . He starred as Teen Angel in the 1994 Grease performance . Porter also played off-Broadway on shows like Radiant Baby and Angels in America .

In 1997 his first solo album Billy Porter was released: Untitled . His voice can also be heard on other albums, including A Very Rosie Christmas , Jim Brickman's Destiny , Adam Guettel's Myths & Hymns , Gershwin and Sondheim Benefit Albums , Hercules (Disney) and Anastasia (Warner Bros.) . On April 15, 2014, his solo album Billy's Back on Broadway was released .

Billy Porter also starred in several films and series, such as Intrigue - Erotic and Dangerous , The Broken Heart Club , Law & Order and Pose . Porter has worked in several theater productions as a director and playwright. His biggest hits include Being Alive, Twilight in Manchego and The Soul of Richard Rodgers .

In October 2014, Porter played the role of Lola on Broadway in the hit musical Kinky Boots , written by Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper .

Billy Porter received several awards for this role, including the 2013 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

Since 2018 Porter can be seen in the series Pose in the lead role of Pray Tell . After being nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his acting performance in 2019 , he was honored at the Emmys in the category Best Actor - Drama Series .

Porter has been married to entrepreneur Adam Smith since January 14, 2017.
