Chrisette Michele Payne (born December 8, 1982 in Central Islip, Long Island , New York ) is an American R&B singer.

biography

Chrisette Michele grew up on Long Island. Her father was a deacon of the Church in Patchogue and also played the church organ while her mother conducted the church choir. She herself had piano and dance lessons in her childhood. At 17, she discovered jazz singing for herself and took up singing and jazz performance at Five Townes College .

In addition, she began performing at events and clubs. She was discovered by India.Arie while performing in a New York club and was allowed to sing in the opening act for her and later also for Angie Stone at their performances. Representatives of the Def Jam label also became aware of them and signed them in 2006.

In the same year she was represented on a number by rapper Jay-Z , which made it into the US singles chart. Her own career, however, began with disappointment when the song Irreplaceable , which she had previously turned down, was made a number one hit by Beyoncé . Nevertheless, her debut album I Am was released in mid-2007 , which she wrote herself and finished in collaboration with well-known producers. It got off to a good start, reaching number 29 on the album sales and number 5 on the R&B charts. She received her first Grammy nomination for the song If I Have My Way in 2008 , and for Be OK , which was created together with Will.i.am , she won the following year in the category Best Urban / Alternative Performance .

In 2009 Chrisette Michele finished her second album Epiphany , this time with support from Ne-Yo , among others . This time the album went straight to number 1 on the US charts when it was released . With the title song she also entered the singles charts for the first time.
