Yolanda Adams
Yolanda Yvette Adams (born August 27, 1961 in Houston , Texas ) is an American gospel singer .
Life
Yolanda Adams is the oldest child of six siblings. She graduated from Sterling High School in Houston in 1979 and studied at the University of California at Berkeley . She then worked as a teacher and part-time model in Houston. From 1980 to 2004 she was married to former football player Tim Crawford. The couple has a daughter (* 2001).
Career
In the mid-1980s she was discovered as a member of a gospel choir and began a full-time career as a solo singer. Her first solo album, Just As I Am , was released in 1987. To date, she has recorded a total of ten studio albums and two live albums, all of which made it into the top ten of the US gospel charts. In 1999 her sixth album Mountain High ... Valley Low was released , with which she gained notoriety outside of the gospel scene and came on the Billboard 200 to 24th place. It went platinum. The single, Open My Heart , reached 57th place on the Billboard Hot 100 . At the Grammy Awards 2000 , the album was recognized in the category Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album . In 2001 she also received the American Music Award . At the Grammy Awards 2002 she received her second Grammy Award for the live album The Experience . She received two other Grammys at the Grammy Awards 2006 and the Grammy Awards 2007 in the categories of Best Gospel Song and Best Gospel Performance .
In addition to her work as a singer, she regularly presents the four-hour Yolanda Adams Morning Show for Radio One .
