The Maytones

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maytones , also known as The Mighty Maytones , is a Jamaican reggae singing duo that was active between the late 1960s and 1980s.

Band history

The Maytones were founded in the late 1960s by Vernon Buckley and Gladstone Grant, who both lived in May Pen , Clarendon , which is what inspired the group's name.

After recording two unreleased Rocksteady tracks for Studio One , they recorded much of their earlier material for Alvin Ranglin , with local success with "Loving Reggae" and "Funny Man", and released a version of Greyhound's in 1970 "Black and White".

They had other hits in Jamaica with love songs like "Preaching Love", "If Loving You Was Wrong" and "Brown Girl" before adopting a roots reggae style for songs like "Judas", Babylon A Fall "and" Run Babylon " assumed.

They had great success with "Madness", which was recorded again for Ranglin, followed by an album of the same name.

The success of the Mighty Diamonds led the group and producers Ranglin and Clement Bushay to market the duo as the Mighty Maytones.

This was followed in 1978 by the album Boat To Zion , which could not meet the expectations of success and was not noticed by the British record companies , which otherwise signed many Jamaican talents.

The Maytones contributed the track "Money Worries" to the 1979 film Rockers .

When Buckley moved to Canada in 1980 , the band broke up. A reunion took place in the 2000s.

Vernon released the solo album Raw , recorded and performed with Bedouin Soundclash .
