Israel Houghton
Israel Houghton (born May 19, 1971 in Oceanside (California) ) is an American gospel singer , singer-songwriter and worship leader . He became known for his intercultural style of Christian music, which fused elements from gospel, jazz , rock music and reggae . Houghton usually appears under the name "Israel & New Breed". He is a worship leader at Joel Osteens Lakewood Church in Houston , Texas .
biography
Houghton is the illegitimate son of a white mother and a black father. His mother was still a minor when he was conceived but refused any abortion plans that were proposed to her. She was a talented concert pianist with a promising career ahead of her. She separated from the child's father while she was still pregnant.
Houghton, his wife Meleasa, and their three children, Mariah, Israel, and Milan Lillie lived in Kingwood, near Houston. On February 22, 2016, Houghton announced on his Facebook page that he and his wife were divorcing after a long separation.
Musical career
Israel Houghton is a prolific worship leader, musician, songwriter, producer, and recording artist. He plays guitar and keyboards and has been writing sacred music since 1994. His work includes over 50 albums as an artist or producer, for which he received 19 awards.
In 1995 Houghton founded the "New Breed", which debuted with him in 1997 with the productions "Whisper It Loud" and "Way of the World". During this time, Houghton has released eleven individual and group CDs and had commercial success with Billboard chart toppers "New Season", "Power of One" and "Jesus At The Center". He achieved gold status with the sales of the albums "Alive in South Africa" and "Live From Another Level".
Houghton brought together a group of world-class musicians and singers to create a new Christian world music sound that will add a new color to the sound of contemporary Praise & Worship music. He has received numerous Grammy, Dove, Stellar, NAACP Image, and Soul Train Award nominations and has won several including five Grammy Awards, 13 Dove Awards, two Stellar Awards, and a Soul Train Music Awards.
Appearances
Israel & New Breed joined Alicia Keys at the MTV Video Music Awards 2007 for a performance of George Michael 's "Freedom! '90. “Israel and New Breed enriched the 2008 Grammy Awards as a participant in a gospel music address, alongside greats like Aretha Franklin and BeBe Winans .
Houghton also sang with Michael W. Smith on the album "A New Hallelujah," which was recorded live in 2008 at Lakewood Church in Houston.
