Leon Bridges (born July 13, 1989 in Atlanta , Georgia ; actually Todd Michael Bridges ) is an American retro soul singer from Fort Worth .

biography

Leon Bridges was born in Atlanta, but after his parents separated he spent most of his youth in Texas . Originally he wanted to be a dancer, it wasn't until college that he began to play guitar and compose. Initially called Lost Child , he played gospel and neo-soul in the style of Usher and Ginuwine before turning to the soul of the 1960s by Sam Cooke and Otis Redding . During one of his appearances, Austin Jenkins and Justin Block of White Denim spotted him and did a few screen tests with him. In October 2014 he published the song Coming Home on the Gorilla vs. Bear . The song received a lot of attention and was included in the program of the radio stations. Several labels competed for him and Columbia Records won the end of 2014.

Production of his debut album began, and in March 2015 he performed on South by Southwest and received praise from the press. He also appeared on television and went on tour with the band Lord Huron . The album named after the single Coming Home was released worldwide in June and took number 1 on the US R&B charts. In the official charts of the USA as well as in Canada, Great Britain and Australia it came into the top ten. It also made it into the charts in Germany and Switzerland. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. The successor Good Thing was nominated as an album for a Grammy; the resulting single Bet Ain't Worth The Hand won the award for the best traditional R&B performance.

In 2020, Leon Bridges was featured as a feature artist on several singles, including C-Side of Khruangbin , with whom he had recently released the EP Texas Sun , and Inside Friend with guitarist John Mayer . Deeply hit by the violent killing of the African American George Floyd , Bridges preferred to release the single Sweeter . The collaboration with Terrace Martin is about racist violence and was originally due to appear later that year.
