Khruangbin is an American band that was formed in Houston , Texas .

The band consists of the trio Laura Lee, Mark Speer and Donald Ray "DJ" Johnson Jr.

Origin and career

Speer and Johnson met in 2004 when they were playing in Rudy Rasmus' gospel band St. John's Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. The Church employed Speer as guitarist and Johnson as organist. In 2007, Speer and Lee met through friends. In 2009, Speer taught Lee to play the bass. In 2010 she and Speer went on tour with Yppah and Bonobo . After the tour with Bonobo, Khruangbins presented the song Calf Born in Winter . Upon their return, they asked Donald Ray to join the band as a drummer and play simple breakbeats .

When they were about to make their first big gig, they looked for a band name and decided on Laura's favorite Thai word "khruangbin" (เครื่องบิน) for "airplane" (literally: "aircraft").

After touring with Bonobo, Khruangbin was introduced by The Guardian as "New Band of the Week," which gave him the opportunity to play as the opening act for Father John Misty , Tycho , Chicano Batman and Massive Attack . They played at festivals like Glastonbury , Bonnaroo , ACL , Outside Lands, Desert Daze and South by Southwest .

In January 2018, Khruangbin released her second album, Con Todo El Mundo . The title of the album comes from Laura Lee's Mexican-American grandfather, who often asked the suggestive question: “How do you love me?” (“¿Cómo me quieres?”) And only the answer “con todo el mundo” (“with the whole World ”) accepted. In 2018 and 2019 the band toured Europe.

In February 2020 they released the EP "Texas Sun" with Leon Bridges , followed by the album "Mordechai" via Dead Oceans on June 26th.
