Tycho (* 7. February 1977 in Sacramento , California ; real name is Scott Hansen ) is an American music producer , composer , songwriter , graphic and at the same time lead musician of the music project of the same name in the field of Ambient - and Chill Wave music .

biography

Scott Hansen was born and raised in a suburb of Sacramento. After graduating from school in 1994, Hansen began studying computer science at California State University in Sacramento, which he dropped out after two years. He then went to San Francisco and studied at the University of San Francisco . After only a few months, Hansen dropped out again and moved back to his hometown Sacramento. In 2006, he applied for a job in a design company in San Francisco.

In 2004 Hansen released his first studio album, Sunrise Projector , which he produced and which was released two years later under the title Past Is Prologue by Merck Records . From this album, Hansen released an EP of the same name in 2007 and a reissue album in 2010 . The music label Ghostly International rated the album positively.

In 2010 Hansen became aware of the four musicians Zac Brown, Rory O'Connor, Billy Kim and Joe Davancens. Together with Hansen, they decided to start a band. The future music project was named like Hansen Tycho's stage name. Since his tour of the United States on July 9, 2010, Brown, O'Connor, Kim and Davancens have performed as live barebacking artists , while Hansen is the lead guitarist. Joe Davancens, who until then had played guitar, keyboard and synthesizer, left the music project after a few months to concentrate on his career as a solo musician.

On November 8th 2011 the second studio album Dive was released . It reached number 22 in the US Billboard Dance Charts and number 39 in the US Billboard Top Heatseekers.

On March 8, 2014, Hansen released his third studio album, Awake , under Ghostly International . This was able to place itself in the charts in the United States as well as in European countries such as Belgium or Great Britain. A mixtape of this album was released in January 2016 under the name Awake Remixes . In 2016 the fourth album Epoch came out, which was also produced under the label Ghostly International and presented to the public. Epoch rose to number one on the US Billboard Dance Chart and was nominated for Best Dance / Electronic Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards .

In 2019 the album Weather was released , on which Hansen partly worked with the artist Hannah Cottrell, whose singing was described by the online radio station ByteFM as underlining the album's "stylish tension arcs".

style

Hansen's songs and musical sounds are characterized by a combination of downtempo vintage style and melodies in the style of the ambient. To this end, he often skillfully uses synthesizers . Hansen himself describes his style of music as "organic" and "fluid". Often he also builds simple sound elements and noises, such as B. rain, thunderstorms, human conversation or the breathing of living beings. His music style is mostly compared to that of DJ Shadow , Ulrich Schnauss and the band Boards of Canada .

Hansen is also known for his colorful, abstract and melancholy photographs and prints, which he often makes and uses for his album and single covers under the artist name ISO50 .
