Maggie Rogers (born April 25, 1994 ; actually Margaret Debay Rogers ) is an American singer-songwriter and pop musician from Easton , Maryland . She first gained fame with a viral video in which Pharrell Williams was deeply impressed by her title Alaska , which she produced in a master class at Tisch School .

Life

Rogers grew up in rural eastern Maryland. She started playing the harp at the age of seven and enjoyed listening to works by Gustav Holst and Antonio Vivaldi . Her mother also introduced her to the music of neo-soul artists such as Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu . As a teenager she learned to play the guitar and piano , and she also began to write songs. Rogers attended St. Andrew's High School in Delaware , where her interest turned increasingly to the banjo and folk music . She won a songwriting competition on a five-week summer program at Berklee School of Music , which encouraged her to focus on this area.

In her senior year of high school, she released her first album, The Echo , which she produced herself as well as the follow-up album. After graduating, she attended Tisch School and released her second album, Blood Ballet . Both works can largely be assigned to the singer-songwriter style, but are partly also instrumented; there are also isolated folk or indie pop pieces.

In 2016, Pharrell Williams was enthusiastic about her title Alaska in a viral video , which then became a hit with a video produced for it. In February 2017, the EP Now That the Light Is Fading followed , which contains four other tracks in addition to Alaska and with which Rogers has turned stylistically to pop music.

In January 2019 was followed by the pop album Heard It in a Past Life the Major debut at Capitol Records . It rose to number 2 on the US album charts . In 2019 she toured the world with the album in North America , Europe and Australia . She played u. a. at the Sydney Opera House , in Roskilde , as well as in Glastonbury and at Coachella .
