Bonobo is the stage name of Simon Green (born March 30, 1976 in Leeds ), an English producer , composer , musician and DJ . He uses a variety of instruments in his pieces. It can be classified in the genre downtempo .

Live and act

Simon Green grew up in rural Hampshire . His father was involved in the British folk scene. Green learned to play guitar and piano at an early age .

Green's bonobo career began in Brighton around 2000 . His first two singles were remixed by Amon Tobin ( Scuba , 1999) and Mr. Scruff ( Terrapin , 2000) . In 2000 his debut album Animal Magic was released on the British label Tru Thoughts . Just a year later, Bonobo signed a contract with Ninja Tune . His breakthrough came in 2006 with Days to Come . The album was voted album of the year by listeners to Gilles Peterson's famous music show on BBC 1 , among others .

He has performed at major festivals such as Glastonbury and Coachella .

style

Bonobo's music is characterized by the combination of live instrumentation with electronic sounds. At concerts he is usually accompanied by a live band and plays bass himself. He often works with female vocalists (including Speech Debelle , Erykah Badu , Andreya Triana , Bajka , Szjerdene ), and occasionally with male singers. He also appears as a solo DJ , and Ninja Tune has released two of his DJ mixes so far.

His music is usually classified as downtempo , but it also contains elements of acid jazz , ambient and other subgenres of electronic music, as well as hip-hop and soul .
