Speech Debelle (born March 17, 1983 in London ; real name Corynne Elliott ) is an English rapper of Jamaican descent.
Career
Corynne Elliott grew up alone with her mother after her father left her when she was six years old. When she was nine she wrote her first poems and then turned to rap. She left school without a qualification and fell out with her mother, after which she lived without a permanent address for four years until they were reconciled.
At 23, she applied to various record labels and was signed by Big Dada . Her debut album Speech Therapy was released in May 2009 and won the prestigious Mercury Prize , after which her album also entered the UK charts .
