Need for Speed: Undercover ( NFSUC for short ) is the twelfth part of the racing game series Need for Speed developed by Electronic Arts and was released on November 20, 2008 for Windows , PlayStation 2 , PlayStation 3 , PlayStation Portable , Xbox 360 , Nintendo DS , Wii . Later versions for Apple iOS , Microsoft Windows Phone and HP webOS were also released.
Gameplay
In contrast to its predecessor, Pro Street, there is again a freely navigable city in this part, which, like Most Wanted, can be explored during the day. In addition to the freely navigable city, some features from predecessors such as Most Wanted and the first two Hot Pursuit parts are taken up again. So it is possible again to be followed by the police. In addition to free driving in the city, there are the following racing modes:
- Highway battle: Two vehicles drive at high speeds on a busy motorway. The vehicle that is the first to have a lead of 300 meters or that has reached the finish line before wins.
- Sprint: Running from one point on the map to another with a fixed path.
- Circuit: Race with the same start and finish point over several laps.
- Outrun: running from one point on the map to another, where the whole map is passable. The vehicle that is in 1st place when the timer expires wins.
- Checkpoint: Race with multiple checkpoints and a timer. The respective checkpoints must be passed before the timer expires. Each checkpoint passed increases the timer by a certain time.
Performing well in the races increases driver skills. However, this happens according to a fixed scheme and the player cannot decide which skills he primarily wants to develop. In addition to the races, there are also pursuits and jobs. The following modes are available for pursuit:
- Take out cops
- damage
- Escape
The following modes are available for the jobs:
- Hot car: The aim is to steal a car and deliver it as undamaged as possible to a certain location in the city.
- Driver: A car is stolen in this mode too. However, the police must also be removed beforehand.
- Boss Chase: In this mode, the goal is to chase the boss of a certain criminal syndicate and destroy his car before it reaches a certain point in the city.
All different racing, chase and job events increase the reputation with the criminal syndicates of the city, which unlocks new races, jobs and chases and moves the story forward.
action
Like some of the earlier parts with a game world that is open outside of the races, the game has a basic story that provides the reason for driving the illegal street races. In Need for Speed: Undercover is the invisible, nameless main character of the game, an undercover police officer, who is supposed to infiltrate the street racer scene of the fictional city of Tri-City and finally to excavate it. While the player is now advancing further and further into the street racer scene, a plot is forged to blame the player for a robbery that is committed by the actual client and her accomplice. The story of the game is roughly based on films like The Transporter .

The game received almost exclusively negative ratings in the trade press. On the Metacritic.com site, depending on the version, it achieved a metascore of between 52% (PSP) and 65% (PC). Above all, the bad graphics with numerous pop-ups and the demotivating behavior of the police were criticized.
