Need for Speed: World ( NFSW for short ) was the 15th part of the Need for Speed computer racing game series developed by Electronic Arts and was released on July 27, 2010 for Windows . It was the first pure online game in the series that also included role-playing elements. On July 14, 2015, the servers for the game were shut down, which also meant the end of the game.

Gameplay

Need for Speed: World was set in a spacious, freely navigable world. This consisted of the fictional regions in which the earlier series parts Most Wanted and Carbon played. While the recently published NFS titles were dedicated to legal races on closed racetracks, you could find yourself in chases with the police in this section. In addition, NFS- typical elements such as a large selection of licensed cars and individual tuning options were offered. You could also share your own victories and defeats on Facebook and Twitter .

There were two currencies in the game, one of which had to be purchased for real money. With this so-called "SpeedBoost", cars could be rented or purchased permanently, as well as powerups that offered certain advantages during races or chases. Alternatively, you had the option to activate multipliers for prestige and money in order to increase your rank faster or to win more units of the second currency (credits), which you won after the races or after a successful escape from the police. It could also be spent on other vehicles, better tuning parts and repairs.

Just like money, you earned prestige ( experience points ) that allowed the player to rise in rank. The further one rose in rank, the more money and prestige the player received. In addition, you got access to more garage spaces and vinyls that you could attach to your car for embellishment at different intervals. From level three, each player received a one-time 500 SpeedBoost. Unlike at the beginning of the game, in later versions all routes and events were already activated from the second level. However, only about 35 of a total of more than 100 events were available for all players each week (originally: daily). These included circuit and sprint races, drag races, as well as individual and team pursuits with the police. At these events the player won not only money and prestige but also powerups, skill mods, tuning parts and accessories. With the so-called skill mods, the properties of each car could be changed in different ways. For example, a car could be adapted to either a sprint race (better acceleration) or a chase (improved collision energy). The skill mods replaced the old system of skill points that were awarded for each new level and were valid for all of the player's cars. 1- to 2-star tuning parts and skill mods were relatively weak and frequent and could be purchased in the shop for normal play money. 3- to 5-star tuning parts and mods were stronger, but all the more rare. They could only be won by chance after the end of an event, or bought in the shop for real money. In the treasure hunt mode the player could collect 15 gemstones randomly distributed on the map every day. If all gems were collected, you received an additional boost in prestige and money and a reward in the form of tuning parts or skill mods. As a result, the longer the series went on day after day, the higher the rewards. If the series was interrupted for at least a day, it was reset to the first day. However, for a certain amount of SpeedBoost, the player was able to resume the series from the point at which it was interrupted. Thanks to the achievement of achievements, it was also possible for the player to receive further rewards.

Vehicle list

Need for Speed: World contained the following cars until the end:

The following vehicles have already been officially announced by EA, but never used in the game for unknown reasons:

Development history

Closed beta phases took place regularly until the beginning of July 2010 to thoroughly test the game. The last public beta phase was from July 2nd to 5th, 2010. The game was released on July 27th of the same year. Players who pre-ordered the game could play the game as early as July 20th. Players who bought the starter package before September 8th 2010 received the status VIP in their profile .

At the beginning of September 2010 EA announced that new content would come for Need for Speed: World , including another game mode, refined tuning options, a day-night cycle , new cars and the still locked city of Downtown Rockport .

Since September 8, 2010 the game has been free-to-play . From then on all players could play up to the highest experience level of the game. Before that, the options for players who hadn't bought the game were severely limited.

At the end of October 2010, the new areas were activated and additional race tracks were added.

In mid-November 2010, the tuning system was completely overhauled with version 5.0, so there are no longer any fixed packages with combined optical and technical improvements that have to be installed separately from then on. Various parts of the vehicle can be replaced individually with better components. At the same time, these parts are subject to wear and tear, which reduces their effectiveness over time and must be repaired. The night mode was added in December.

In March 2011, "Team Escape" (were -race Team Escape ) added, in which two to four players dodge in tubular stretching police barriers and must shake off pursuing police cars. At the end of 2011, the police cars driving around the world were removed and replaced by car chases that could be selected.

At the end of August 2012, the previously existing vehicle levels 1–3 will be abolished and replaced by classes that dynamically result from the three vehicle values, maximum speed, acceleration and handling. The races that used to be unlockable with increasing levels have been changed so that only a small selection can be played per day, some of which are limited to a certain vehicle class. In addition, the maximum number of players in a race has been reduced from eight to six.

The success system was added to the game in early April 2013 . By collecting Driverscore points, e.g. B. by installing optics or tuning parts, completing a certain number of races or by destroying police cars in "team escape" races, you unlock new tuning parts, special cars and other different rewards. If you reach 5000 Driverscore points you will receive the 2005 Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 , which EA dubbed the fastest car in NFS World . There were 64 achievements, more were announced but no longer added to the game.

However, EA announced on April 15, 2015 that it would shut down the server for the game on July 14 of the same year and thus set the end of the game.

Community events

Officials regularly hold winning events, for example part of the game world was redecorated for the period during the Oktoberfest, and another special race was held for Halloween with oversized pumpkins and ghost figures on the roadside. Similarly, patch 5.03 brought a snow-covered golf course that is equipped with ski jumps and snow cannons.

reception

Need for Speed: World was not well received by the trade press. Many ratings in Germany ranged between 50 and 60% of the fun game assessment. The international average rating of 62% (according to Metacritic ) reflected cautious enthusiasm. Criticism was often raised of the empty game world and the immature free-to-play system.

Need for Speed World: Offline Server

Since June 26th, 2015 it has been possible to play the game without any connection to a master server using an unofficial offline server script . Since all the data about the player is on his PC, elements such as money or bonuses can be modified by the player himself.
