The Lamborghini Murciélago is a sports car from the vehicle manufacturer Lamborghini , which was presented at the IAA 2001 in Frankfurt. 4099 units were produced between 2001 and 2010.
The Murciélago was designed by the Belgian car designer Luc Donckerwolke and is the first Lamborghini vehicle to be developed under the aegis of the new parent company Audi . The model variants were coupé (LP640), roadster and a racing version (Murciélago R-GT). The direct competitors of the Murciélago included the Ferrari 575 and the 599 GTB , although, unlike the Murciélago, these do not have a mid-engine or all-wheel drive .
The previous model was the Lamborghini Diablo , which was introduced in 1990. The successor Lamborghini Aventador was presented in March 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show .
Naming
The name Murciélago (German: bat) comes from the fighting bull of the same name bred by Joaquín del Val de Navarra, who fought a particularly outstanding fight against the matador Rafael Molina Sánchez (" Lagartijo ") on October 5, 1879 in the Cordoba arena whereupon the audience asked him to forego the fatal blow, which he did (Indulto).
After the fight, Murciélago was given to the breeder Antonio Miura, who founded a new breeding line with this bull, whose offspring can still be found in Spanish arenas today.
body
Special design elements are the scissor doors - often incorrectly referred to as wing doors - and the extendable cooling openings behind the doors. You can also see borrowings from legendary Lamborghini models: the wedge shape of the Countach , the rear slats of the Miura and the proportions of the Diablo . The Murciélago has a tubular frame made of steel and a body in painted carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP).
Street versions
Murciélago Roadster
The open version of the Murciélago was the fastest roadster in the world when it was launched in 2005. The top speed of 320 km / h is reached with the top down, as the top is only permitted up to 160 km / h. Despite the various stiffeners and the extendable roll bars, which increase the weight by 150 kg, the performance differs only very slightly from that of the coupé. Special features of the roadster are the 7 centimeters lower body and a modified engine cover.
The designer of the Murciélago, Luc Donckerwolke, said in an interview with the American car magazine Road & Track that the Northrop B-2 , the 118 WallyPower from Wally Yachts and the Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias in Valencia were the inspiration for the roadster served.
40th Anniversary special model
For the 40th company anniversary, a special model was released in 2003, which continues the series of special models for company anniversaries (1988: Countach 25th , 1993: Diablo SE 30th ).
The Murciélago special model 40th Anniversary differs from the standard model by the three-layer special paintwork green artemis pearl effect and some changes in the interior.
The upper door strips, the rear window frame and the tank lid are covered with visible KFK. The anthracite-colored wheels have hub caps with a three-dimensional company logo.
The vehicle number of this anniversary edition, which is limited to 50 vehicles, can be seen on the rear side windows. It costs around 15,000 euros more than the production version and is equipped with a personalized certificate that is delivered with an exclusive, leather-covered case.
Murciélago LP640
In early 2006, the Murciélago Coupé was revised and renamed Murciélago LP640 . The design and the interior were only slightly changed. The 12-cylinder engine has been completely redesigned. Its displacement was increased from 6.2 to 6.5 liters. The cylinder heads, the camshafts, the crankshaft and the exhaust system were newly developed. With these changes, the engine has an output of 471 kW and 660 Nm of torque. The name LP640 is made up of "Longitudinale Posteriore" (which means something like "longitudinally rear" and describes the installation position of the engine) and the 640 hp. The roadster was built unchanged until the appearance of the LP640 Roadster.
In 2010, Lamborghini had to recall about 400 LP640 and LP640 Roadster vehicles in the US because some vehicles caught fire from a leaking tank. The years 2007 and 2008 were particularly affected.
Murciélago LP640 Roadster
The new Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster was presented at the LA Auto Show in late November 2006 . It is the new version of the Murciélago Roadster. It has the same V12 engine as the LP640 Coupé, which has an output of 471 kW. A new infotainment system from Kenwood with a 6.5 "widescreen monitor was added to the equipment list .
Murciélago LP640 Versace
The Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Versace was presented at the Paris Mondial de l'Automobile .
This special series of the Murciélago LP640 Coupé was designed in collaboration with Gianni Versace SpA . The most striking features include the special exterior paintwork Aldebaran black and Isis white and the black painted wheels. There were also special versions of interior details, such as the seats.
The special series is limited to 20 pieces.

Reventón
The Lamborghini Reventón was presented at the IAA 2007 in Frankfurt. The model, limited to 22 vehicles, has 478 kW (650 hp) and 660 Nm of torque. Of these 22 produced copies, 20 were sold, one is in the Lamborghini Museum, another is for test purposes.
The design, which is based on the Murciélago LP640, has been greatly changed and is reminiscent of the angular shape of modern fighter jets. In the interior, with aluminum, KFK and Alcantara is equipped, there are three LCD monitors with touch screen and an accelerometer which acting while driving accelerations displays. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 3.4 s and the top speed is 340 km / h.
The name of this special model goes back to the fighting bull of the same name, Reventón, bred by Don Rodriguez. He killed the Mexican matador Félix Guzmán in 1943. The price for the Reventón is € 1,000,000 net.
A roadster model of the Reventón was presented at the IAA 2009. This has 493 kW (670 PS), the maximum torque is 660 Nm as with the Coupé. Twenty Roadsters were built at a net price of € 1,100,000 each.
Murciélago LP670-4 SV
The Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SV was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in early March 2009 . The additional name of the special model limited to 350 pieces stands for SuperVeloce (German: "super fast"). The weight was reduced by 100 kg through the use of lightweight materials, and the output was increased by 22 kW (30 hp) to 493 kW (670 hp). As a result, the car reaches a top speed of 337 to 342 km / h , which varies depending on the size of the rear wing . In addition, the sprint with the sequential transmission from 0 to 100 km / h only takes 3.2 seconds. The most striking thing about the changed design is the front and rear with the new attachments made from KFK. On request, the 6-speed manual transmission was also available instead of the sequential one.
Murciélago LP650-4 Roadster
The Lamborghini Murciélago LP650-4 Roadster is a limited edition of 50 pieces of the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster. The 6.5 l V12 now develops 478 kW (650 hp). The maximum torque is 660 Nm. The special feature is the two -tone paintwork in gray Grigio Telesto and the orange tone called Arancio LP650-4 on the front spoiler and side skirts. This color combination is also continued in the interior with orange seams, shift paddles and controls. Further features are the transparent engine cover and the orange painted brake calipers. The Murciélago LP650-4 Roadster was available from spring 2009.
Murciélago R-GT
The Murciélago R-GT was specially developed for the GT1 group by the Audi sports department and the Reiter-Engineering company. Thanks to an air flow limiter , the output of 404 kW is 22 kW less than that of the standard model.
Due to the regulations, the R-GT only has rear-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive like the standard version. It has a reduced curb weight of 1100 kg. The body was made of black, carbon fiber reinforced plastic and then coated with clear varnish.
The price for the R-GT was just under € 500,000. From 2003 to 2009, several vehicles took part in the FIA GT Championship , Le Mans Series , American Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans .
The 2009 Asian Le Mans Series title was the vehicle's only championship win.
Production numbers
Since the debut at the IAA 2001 in Frankfurt, 4099 copies were produced from August 2001 to November 2010. The Murciélago thus exceeds the sales figures of the Diablo, which was produced 2903 times in its more than 10-year construction period.
