Kenwood is a former Japanese entertainment and communications electronics company. In 2008, it merged with former competitor JVC to form JVC Kenwood .

Company history

For a short time, Kenwood also made racing bikes.

After World War II, Kenwood was established as a radio manufacturer in 1946, originally as Kasuga Radio Co. Ltd. founded in Komagane City by Jiro Kasuga and renamed Kasuga Radio Industry Corporation in 1950. In 1955 a mass production plant was built in Tokyo and in 1960 the company was renamed Trio Corporation . From 1961 the company was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Expansion and worldwide marketing began in 1963 with a branch in Los Angeles . On May 14th, 1968 the European branch opened in Belgium. In 1972, the company's founder, Jiro Kasuga, left the company and founded a new company called Kensonic. From 1980 the company specialized in the production and marketing of radio and cassette devices for motor vehicles "Car Audio". In 1982 Kenwood helped develop the first CD player.

Kenwood Corporation

In 1986 the name was changed again to Kenwood Corporation and the production of mobile CD players.

From 1992 navigation systems for motor vehicles were also part of the product range, which was constantly expanding and also integrated mobile radio systems (PHP Personal Handy Phone System). In 1997 a receiver for the digital terrestrial radio transmission standard DAB was presented in motor vehicles. This was followed later by the integration of hard disk and DVD navigation systems, smartphones and the digitization of the company radio according to the APCO P25 and TETRA standards. In June 1997, Kenwood became Japan's first manufacturer to introduce a car DAB receiver. In 1999 Kenwood developed the world's first mobile digital TV receiver. In 2002, Kenwood USA Corporation began selling the first digital radio systems in the USA. In 2003, Kenwood worked with the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International for the application of Voice Synthesis technology in the automotive field. In 2004 the music distribution company Any Music Inc. was founded. In 2005 the first portable hard disk audio player from Kenwood was introduced.

JVC Kenwood Holding Corporation

Representatives from Kenwood and the previous Panasonic Corp. - Subsidiary Victor Company of Japan (JVC) agreed in 2007 to work together and establish J & K Technologies (later J & K Car Electronics ) as a joint venture company. In 2008, the cooperation was also expanded to include administrative cooperation between the two companies, which on October 1, 2008 resulted in the joint JVC Kenwood Holding .

On August 1, 2011, the merger ended with the renaming of the holding company JVC Kenwood Corporation .
