Rafael Molina Sánchez , called Lagartijo ( lizard ) (born November 27, 1841 in Córdoba ; † August 1, 1900 there ) was a famous Spanish bullfighter .

Life

Lagartijo was the son of Banderillero Manuel Molino and was introduced to fighting bulls by his father as a young boy; his active time as a bullfighter ( matador ) began on September 28, 1865. By the end of his profession in 1893, he had killed 4867 bulls in 29 bullfighting sessions and 1632 corridas and was thus considered the record holder for a long time, before he was only through in summer 2016 the matador Enrique Ponce was replaced. He was seriously injured seven times by the end of his career.

Lagartijo was awarded the highest honorary title for Spanish bullfighters "Califa" ("Kalif").

In his honor a bust was erected at his place of residence in Córdoba in 2002 .

In the Andalusian city ​​of Linares , a bullfighting museum was named after Lagartijo.

Trivia

Lagartijo and his toreros competed on July 26, 1869 in a spectacular fight against the Toro de Lidia Gordito , who killed a total of twenty-one horses of the Picadores (lancers) in the Tercio de Varas (first third) and then in the second act of the fight by the President of the bullring in El Puerto de Santa María was pardoned ( Indulto ).
