Gordito († July 26, 1869 ) was a Spanish fighting bull ( Toro de Lidia ) bred by José López Cordero, who killed twenty-one horses in a bullfight on July 26, 1869 in the bullring of El Puerto de Santa Maria and at the request of the public was then "pardoned".

Gordito (translated: "fat") was driven as the third toro of the afternoon in a fight against the toreros of the matadores Antonio Carmona and Rafael Molina Sánchez (" Lagartijo "). In the first act of this fight, the Tercio de Varas , Gordito received thirty stitches in the neck from the lancers ( picadores ) Onofre Álvarez, Antonio Calderón and Antonio Mondejar ("Juaneca"). Gordito struggled, attacked the Picadores' horses, fatally injuring eighteen of them; three others died of their injuries after the fight ended.

In the second act of the fight, the Tercio de Banderillas , the audience demanded a so-called “pardon” (Spanish: Indulto ) of the bull. The president of the arena complied with this request. Gordito achieved an indulto as the second fighting bull ever in the bullring of El Puerto de Santa Maria . However, he was so badly injured by the lance that he died in the hallways of the arena immediately after the fight.

Honor and commemoration

The veterinarian and bullfighting chronicler D. Juan J. Zaldivar writes that historically the bullring of El Puerto de Santa Maria was the only one in which a fighting bull had ever killed twenty-one horses.

Gordito was included in the Spanish list of the most famous fighting bulls (Toros Célebres) and is currently third in the list of the best.
